Alberta wildfires 2023: Portable fine particulate matter monitoring data

Description

! Notice: 2023 EBAM data summaries have been relocated. Moving forward, please visit the Wildfire Smoke Portable Monitoring Dashboard. This page will no longer be updated with new data  !

The Alberta Wildfire season officially starts March 1 and runs until October 31 each year. Wildfire smoke can cause poor air quality and reduce visibility across the province. One of the major components of smoke with a risk to human health is fine particulate matter (PM2.5). PM2.5  is made up of very small particles, with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller. PM2.5 can be inhaled into the lungs and may cause health concerns.

In anticipation of, and in response to wildfire activity, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) deploys portable air quality monitoring instrumentation in areas not covered by long term air monitoring stations. Portable Particulate Monitors (EBAMs) are used to monitor and report one hour average concentrations of PM2.5 as a measure of the amount of smoke in air. As the wildfire season progresses, data collected may be provided from different localities around Alberta, depending on emergency response requirements.

May 2023
May 3, 2023: EBAMs have been deployed to the communities of Wildwood and Entwistle due to wildfire activity in the area.

May 12, 2023: Two additional EBAMs have been deployed to the communities of Fox Creek and Whitecourt.

May 17, 2023: One additional EBAM deployed to the community of High Prairie.

May 18, 2023: One additional EBAM deployed to the community of Valleyview.

May 24, 2023: One additional EBAM deployed to the community of Swan Hills.

June 2023
EBAMS remain deployed at Entwistle, Fox Creek, High Prairie, Swan Hills, Valleyview, Whitecourt, and Wildwood.

Please note that the frequency of EBAM graphs updates may occur daily or weekly, dependent on air quality conditions at monitoring locations.

July 2023
EBAMS remain deployed at Entwistle, Fox Creek, High Prairie, Swan Hills, Valleyview, Whitecourt, and Wildwood.

Data moving forward will be provided on Wildfire Smoke Portable Monitoring Dashboard.
